Haven’t Ridden Your E-Bike All Winter? Over-Discharging May Damage Your Battery

Haven’t Ridden Your E-Bike All Winter? Over-Discharging May Damage Your Battery

Winter Battery Check & Maintenance Tips for E-Bike Owners

During winter, many riders reduce or completely stop using their e-bikes due to cold weather, road conditions, or personal schedules. While this is perfectly normal, what many riders don’t realize is that long-term storage without proper battery care can lead to over-discharge, which may permanently affect battery performance.

This is also one of the most common reasons we receive battery-related inquiries when spring arrives.

What Is Battery Over-Discharge — and Why Is Winter Risky?

Over-discharge happens when a battery’s charge level drops too low (for example, staying at or near 0%) and remains there for an extended period without recharging.

Winter increases this risk because:

❄️ Low temperatures accelerate natural battery self-discharge

🚲 Reduced riding means batteries sit unused for long periods

🔌 Batteries are often stored without being partially charged

⏳ Months pass without checking battery status

When a battery stays deeply discharged for too long, cell activity degrades, which can lead to:

Significantly reduced range

Difficulty or failure when charging

Battery errors or complete battery failure

5 Things to Check If Your E-Bike Has Been Sitting All Winter

If you plan to ride less during winter — or haven’t ridden for a while — make sure to check the following:

✅ 1. Check the Battery Charge Level

If the charge is below 30%, recharge immediately

Ideal storage charge: 50%–70%

✅ 2. Inspect the Battery Physically

Look for swelling, cracks, or signs of moisture

Check that battery contacts are clean and corrosion-free

✅ 3. Check the Charger

Make sure the charger indicator light works normally

Ensure the cable and plug are not damaged

✅ 4. Check the Storage Environment

Avoid temperatures below 0°C (32°F)

Store in a dry indoor space, not a damp garage or balcony

✅ 5. Confirm How Long It’s Been Since the Last Charge

If it’s been more than 1–2 months, recharge as soon as possible

Winter Battery Care Tips (Very Important)

💡 Even if you’re not riding, your battery still needs care

🔋 Recharge every 4–6 weeks during long storage

🌡️ Store the battery at 10–25°C (50–77°F)

🔌 Don’t wait until the battery is fully empty before charging

❌ Don’t leave the battery plugged in for extremely long periods

🚫 Avoid using non-original or incompatible chargers

If your e-bike has a removable battery, we strongly recommend:

👉 Removing the battery and storing it indoors, with regular charge checks

Before Riding Again in Spring: Do This First

Before heading out for your first ride of the season:

Fully charge the battery

Avoid long or high-power rides on the first outing

Monitor battery consumption closely

If charging fails or range drops abnormally, stop using the battery and contact support

Final Thoughts

Not riding in winter is fine — neglecting battery care is not.
A few simple habits can greatly extend battery life:

✔️ Charge before storage
✔️ Recharge periodically
✔️ Store in a suitable environment
✔️ Avoid deep over-discharge

If you’re unsure about your battery’s condition, feel free to contact our support team. We’re always happy to help you check and stay safe.

Take care of your battery — and it will take care of your ride. 🚲⚡
